This year, Light in the City is collaborating with Cahaya Society to bring you this holiday festival
Why Cahaya Society?
There are so many people in Sabah doing amazing work that don’t get nearly enough credit or support. Every year with each event, we shine a light on organisations whose work moves us.
This year in particular, we wanted to reach out to our Sabahan brothers and sisters on the East Coast, and we were very pleased that Cahaya Society agreed to partner with us for this year’s event.
Their work in education and increasing literacy within marginalised communities in Sandakan is something that we are humbled to see happening in our home state. It’s just a cute coincidence that their organisation happens to have cahaya (light) in it as well!
Take part in our Shoebox Donation Drive! For RM xxx, you can donate a box of stationery supplies and exercise books to the Cahaya community consisting of illiterate children, orphans, and less affluent communities in Sandakan, Sabah.
We are very excited to be collaborating with Pangrok Sulap for this year’s merch! When thinking about local artists, no name came quicker to mind than theirs.
Pangrok Sulap has been a long standing presence in Sabah, a collective of artists, musicians, and social activists working together to affect social change through art.
Their woodcut prints have been featured in Japan, Korea, and Sri Lanka, and focuses on narratives of Borneo’s rural communities, endangered ways of life, and the natural world. Some of their work captures lighthearted moments of human interaction while others explore more hard hitting issues from human rights to political corruption to environmental exploitation.
